Understanding ScriptureTim Goodall, via The Good Book Stall
Understanding Scripture is a collection of essays that originally appeared in the ESV Study Bible, and have been brought together in a single collection for the specific benefit of Bible students, pastors and other Christians keen on examining more detailed areas that relate to the origins, reliability and meaning of Scripture. This is a fantastic set of essays, and a set that I wish I had read and kept as a resource whilst studying theology. It is helpful both in the breadth of topics it covers and in the summary form that the chapters take.
Divided into helpful sections ranging from how to read Scripture, to understanding the relationship between archeology and the Bible, each chapter is not unnecessarily detailed (indeed, the brevity is a significant bonus), but neither does it shy away from some of the finer points of debate that surround the origins and uses of Scripture.
It is especially good to have all the essays together in one collection and thus enabling those who do not have access to the ESV Study Bible to also benefit from them. Recommended for any who would like an introduction to how to interpret, read, and understand some of the finer details of how the scholars interpret Scripture and back up claims of reliability.
