This story of Hamid and his blind sister Kinza tells what life is like among the peasant farmers in the countryside of Morocco. Written in 1953 life is not so very different there now. Kinza is valuable to her step father as a saleable asset. She can be sold to the beggar who at the beginning of the story hires her to help him with his begging. Kinza’s Mother and Brother cannot bear that this should happen to this sunny tempered toddler. Hamid steals away with Kinza one night, and makes for the town where his Mother once met a white nurse who will surely help......
