      Religion & Transcendence of Capitalism

      Product Description

This book is a four-year enquiry into the contribution of religion to the global change and results in the justification of religions resurgent role in the global context, alongside empires, capitalism and globalization. It addresses key problems in contemporary life, and raises important questions about our growing awareness of the limits of contemporary ways of living, within modern economies and modern religion. Religions contribution is evaluated, long with other aspects, with international and multidisciplinary debates about human happiness and well-being. The final part of the book collects religions contributions for the future, which includes reflections on what it means to be human, ethics, typology and tradition, and faith economics involving both ethical and theological economics. Out of all this a British Christian Social Ethics is developed as a transfiguration of capitalism.

The book covers three main parts with a number of subsections under each one.

      1. Completing Perspectives: A global Context of Interacting Fields.
      2. The religious Contribution: A Complex in Complexities.
      3. Religion and the Transfiguration of Capitalism: Continuing Agendas.

John Atherton is retired cannon theologian of Manchester Cathedral, honorary lecturer of Manchester University, and secretary of the William Temple Foundation.
