The Gospel in the WillowsBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
‘Conversations’ between selected episodes from Kenneth Graham’s classic, The Wind in the Willows>/I>, and passages from the Gospels – that’s how the author describes the 40 brief chapters in this Lent book. It is a novel, refreshing idea, the aim being ‘to see the Gospel message in a new light’, though that message, I felt, gets somewhat embellished at times. The aim is not best served by a hurried read, but by spending time with these deep reflections on Christian faith. We meet characters familiar to anyone who has read and loved the children’s classic - Mole and Ratty, Badger and Toad, for example. Alongside them appear Bible people such as Peter, Thomas and Mary Magdalen. One unfavourable remark, though - I confess I found the author’s penchant for repeating phrases quite tedious – all right if you’re listening, but unhelpful if reading.
