Full Product Description
Henri Nouwen's legacy of spirtual writings drawn from his own experience of loneliness, depression, exhaustion and struggles with discerning God's calling on his life, continues to offer guidance and reassurance to the prodigal heart seeking the road home to the Father God's ready acceptance and loving embrace.
From his life alongside the disabled in the l'Arche Daybreak community, Toronto the world-renowned spiritual guide and counsellor learned to understand the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community, and relationships. Though Henri counselled many people during his lifetime, his principles of discernment were never collected into a single volume.
Now, in association with the Nouwen Legacy Trust, Michael Christensen—one of Nouwen's longtime students—and Rebecca Laird his coursework, journals, and unpublished writings are collected to create the definitive resource on spiritual discernment. In these pages, Henri Nouwen emphasizes listening to the Word of God—in our hearts, in the Bible, in the community of faith, and in the voice of the poor as a way to discern God’s plan.
Discernment by Henri Nouwen; Michael J. Christensen; Rebecca J. Laird was published by SPCK in July 2013 and is our 20781st best seller. The ISBN for Discernment is 9780281071449.

DiscernmentMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
Collated from the collected writings of Nouwen and using stories from his life, especially centred around L'Arche, as illustrations for the principles in the book, there is a beautiful lyrical and mellow feel to it that pays homage to the works of Nouwen himself. It is a blend both of the practical and the principle behind that practice - a wonderful book that is both easy to read and understand on what can sometimes be a confusing issue, even when it really shouldn't be.
Perfect for any fan of Nouwen's writings but equally suited to anyone looking for a good guide to the subject of spiritual discernment.

Nouwen believes our calling and mission may be made clear through the people we meet on our path, the circumstances that each day brings, the books and sacred texts we read and meditate on, and through current events. Discernment seeks the will of God, requiring the disciplines of contemplative prayer, compassionate action and theological reflection.
Discernment has been compiled by two of Nouwen's longtime students, Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird, from coursework, journals and unpublished writings.
"A book on discernment from the writings of Henri Nouwen - what could be better? Tender and true, Nouwen's distinct voice brings a fresh perspective to this ancient and deeply Biblical practice. Discernment, when it is given, is always of gift. So is this book!" - Ruth Haley Barton, Founder, Transforming Center and author of "Pursuing God's Will Together: A Discernment Practice for Leaders"
