Covenant And CreationDavid Ford, via The Good Book Stall
What one word would you choose to summarise the entire Bible? Love? Salvation? Truth? Dumbrell’s answer is seemingly ‘Covenant’. For Dumbrell scripture only makes sense when understood through the lens of a divine covenant between God and His Creation
In this second edition of a title first published in 1984, Dumbrell explores the theme of Covenant throughout the Old Testament focusing in particular on Creation, Abraham, Moses, David and the Exilic period. Dumbrell’s thesis is both simple and challenging: the concept of Covenant is the primary theme in scripture, unveiled at its beginning in Genesis (6:8) as a Covenant with the whole of creation, culminating in the promise and vision of Revelation (21-22).
The universal reach of God’s covenant and its unifying purpose presents a vision of a determined, purposeful and hopeful God. Moreover, Dumbrell draws us towards a realisation that God’s covenant is both comprehensive (for the whole of creation) and deeply personal (for you and me). By definition, covenant is relational and Dumbrell helps us understand that through God’s covenant with creation we are not only drawn into a relationship with God, but also with one another. With extensive notes and exhaustive bibliography Covenant and Creation is surely a seminal work on this area of biblical scholarship
