Through readings of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and George Eliot, this study argues that a heroine\'s progress toward masterful self-hood is by no means assured. Charting the destiny of women in Georgian and Victorian novels, it suggests that becoming a woman involved the loss of authority.
