Computers, telephones, trains and the secret of life itself are among their many achievements – innovations billions of us still rely on, over 150 years later. Ruler of this resourceful bunch was Queen Victoria. Aged just 18 when she took the throne, Victoria’s 63-year reign was one of extremes.

As head of the largest empire that has ever existed, she was queen to a quarter of the world’s population. Her years in power saw Britain champion steam power, spark the industrial revolution and invade territories all over the globe, while at the same time millions of her subjects at home endured terrible poverty.

In response, British scientists made major breakthroughs in medicine and the treatment of life-threatening diseases, and by the end of the 19th century education was free and compulsory for all children, rich and poor.

However, the Victorians did occasionally have a bit of fun. They gave us afternoon tea, music hall, Sherlock Holmes and – for some bizarre reason yet to be explained – the Penny Farthing.

So, hold on to your toppers as we journey back to a Britain that ruled the world and had a major say in how we live today. What larks!
