Ethan is a royal courier who travels around the Persian Empire carrying messages for the king. His adopted brother, Ari, is a concern to the family as he is so reserved and struggles to show his feelings. When Ethan and Ari go to Jerusalem to help rebuild the city wall, along with their friend Nehemiah, their hopes are dashed as they find many difficulties and enemies that prevent the walls from being rebuilt. Ruth lives in Bethlehem. Her stepsister is a bully and makes life miserable for her and her elderly parents. When the farm gets into debt, Ruth is sold as a slave to a local merchant. Ethan and Ari meet the family and try to find ways to help.
Can they trust God to help with the rebuilding of the city wall? Can Ari learn to trust people? And can Ruth ever be free?

'Ancient Persia once had an empire that stretched from Libya to Pakistan — ruled by kings whose royal couriers could cross its vast territory faster than anyone thought possible. Gill Jacobs brings history to life in an imaginative and interesting way, as in all of her other books. Her gripping stories of power, betrayal, and rebellion, along with the Bible as its background are a great read. I commend them as you enjoy the journey.' Clive Anderson, Minister and author

'Enemies All Around is such an exciting book. I couldn't stop reading it! I really liked seeing how God helped Nehemiah and all the workers rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, even when things were difficult. It also helped me imagine what life was like during the Persian Empire. I think this book is great for anyone who wants to learn more about God.' George Roberts, age 8

Much of Gill Jacobs' life has been working with children and young people as a paediatric occupational therapist and also in church youth work. These days she spends much of her time in voluntary work, gardening, writing puppet shows for family services and enjoying her five grandchildren. Her husband is a Messianic Jew. They live in Hampshire and have two grownup daughters.
