2 Inch Altar Candles

Our 2-inch diameter altar candles (approx 50mm) are a standard choice for high altars, specifically sized to fit 2-inch candle sockets commonly found on heavy brass floor stands and Paschal pedestals. Available in lengths from 12 to 36 inches, these candles provide the visual weight and long burn times required for major liturgical services.

To ensure a secure fit, we recommend checking the internal diameter of your sockets before ordering; a precise 50mm fit prevents leaning and ensures the candle burns evenly.

Because of their larger diameter, these candles require specific care to ensure an even melt pool and prevent 'tunneling.' We recommend burning these for at least one hour at a time to allow the wax to reach its optimum temperature. Whether you are looking for a single Paschal candle or bulk packs for the sacristy, our 2-inch range provides a clean, steady flame with minimal soot, preserving the beauty of your church interior.

Care and Safety Guidelines for Altar Candles

To ensure your candles perform at their best and burn safely, please follow these professional guidelines:

Storage and Preparation

  • Storage: Always store candles horizontally on a flat surface. Keep them out of direct sunlight and avoid extreme temperatures to prevent warping or cracking. It is recommended to use candles within two years of purchase.
  • Initial Setup: Ensure the candle is held firmly in an upright position and that the holder is placed on a stable, level surface.
  • Trimming the Wick: Before lighting, check that the wick is straight and not twisted. Trim the exposed wick to approximately 1/2" (12mm) if necessary.

Lighting and Relighting

  • Best Practice for Lighting: Use a lighting taper to expose the full wick to the flame. Avoid using matches or paper, as these can drop debris into the wax pool and cause burning issues.
  • Relighting: Always ensure the burning pool is clear of foreign materials (like match heads or wick trimmings) before relighting to avoid secondary burning. Avoid moving the wick from its established burning shape.
  • Low Flames: If a flame is abnormally low, extinguish the candle. Once the wax has cooled, carefully pare down the top of the candle until enough wick is exposed.

Optimising Performance

  • Extinguishing: Do not blow directly onto the molten wax, as this can cause splashing. Use a candle snuffer, taking care not to damage the wick or the rim of the wax pool.
  • Draught Control: In draughty environments where candles may "gutter" (drip excessively), use candle caps (followers) to stabilise the flame.
  • Cleaning Holders: Use hot water to safely remove wax deposits from metal, glass, or ceramic candle holders.

Vital Safety Information

  • Clearance: When burning candles in confined spaces, ensure there is at least two feet of vertical clearance between the flame and any surface or material above it.
  • Supervision: Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • General Care: Ensure candles are burnt correctly in safe surroundings at all times.
