Volunteering and Culture Manager Location: Peterborough Cathedral Salary: £32,000 per annum | Full-time, Permanent

Peterborough Cathedral is entering an exciting new era of growth, impact, and community engagement. Following its Strategic Review and Masterplan, the Cathedral is ambitious to become a confident, outward-facing civic and cultural anchor, integrating worship, heritage, learning, and community life. Central to this vision are the people who serve here: staff, volunteers, and partners.

We are seeking a Volunteering and Culture Manager to lead and develop the Cathedral’s volunteering programme and help shape a confident, inclusive, and positive organisational culture. This is a hands-on leadership role combining strategic vision with practical delivery, supporting volunteers across worship, welcome, visitor experience, learning, events, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead all aspects of volunteering, including recruitment, onboarding, training, support, and retention.

Grow and diversify the volunteer cohort to reflect the city’s richness and ensure volunteering contributes to the Cathedral’s mission and visitor experience.

Strengthen organisational culture through practical action, modelling shared values, and supporting staff and volunteers through change.

Develop community and corporate volunteering pathways, promoting volunteering as a route to skills, wellbeing, and civic pride.

Maintain volunteer records, monitor impact, and provide insight to inform planning and decision-making.

Act as a central point of contact for volunteers, ensuring safeguarding, compliance, and a supportive environment.

The Ideal Candidate:

Values-led and sympathetic to the Cathedral’s Christian mission.

Experienced in leading volunteers, community engagement, or people-focused initiatives.

Skilled in supporting organisational or cultural change.

Excellent communicator, relationship-builder, and hands-on leader.

Committed to inclusion, diversity, and representation.

Benefits:

37.5 hours/week, flexible working pattern

25 days holiday + 8 bank holidays

Pension and wellbeing scheme

Work in a historic, nationally significant Cathedral with a committed and supportive team

This is a unique opportunity to help shape a new era for Peterborough Cathedral — one of growth, inclusion, generosity, and lasting impact.
