About Fairtrade

All our chocolate is Fairtrade. This means our farmers receive a fair price for their sugar and cocoa and an extra Fairtrade Premium cash payment which they can use to invest in their community, buying everything from schoolbooks to solar panels and providing fresh water supplies.

Sourcing details

Meaningful Chocolate's sugar comes from cooperatives in Paraguay and Belize. Most of the cocoa from cooperatives in the Ivory Coast (Kuapa Kokoo Co-operative Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Union Limited Ghana). Beans are also sourced from cooperatives in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Panama and Ecuador. The chocolate for the eggs is then blended using a Belgian recipe.

Is the chocolate allergy free?

The chocolate contains natural ingredients. The 2024 Real Advent calendar is handmade in the UK in a place where people also handle nuts, therefore we cannot guarantee totally nut free chocolate in this year's calendar. The milk chocolate contains milk and so is not suitable for those with an allergy to lactose. There is also soya lecithin.

Is the Real Advent Calendar suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, the chocolate is made with natural cocoa butter and contains no vegetable fat substitutes.

Where does the chocolate come from and where is it made?

The sugar comes from cooperatives in Paraguay and Belize. Our cocoa from cooperatives in the Ivory Coast with additional higher quality beans, used to create our unique blend, from cooperatives in the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Peru, Panama and Ecuador. The chocolate is made in Belgium.

Why is the chocolate not more healthy?

The aim is to make chocolate that most people can enjoy as a treat and as part of a balanced diet. They use the best natural ingredients in their chocolate. If they replaced natural cocoa butter or sugar with highly processed artificial alternatives then fewer people would enjoy it. So enjoy the chocolate, but be treat wise.

Why is the chocolate not 100% Fairtrade?

All the cocoa and sugar used to make the chocolate is certified Fairtrade. Some ingredients are not yet certified as Fairtrade.

Does the chocolate contain palm oil?

No. In the UK it is possible to add 5% vegetable fat to chocolate. Unlike some larger manufacturers, they don't add any palm oil or any other oils to their chocolate. It's just natural chocolate.

As you can see by the title, this hasn’t been opened being October! The reason I bought this particular calendar, it not only has biblical image on the calendar and as you open a window for each day during Advent there is the chocolate that every child is looking for in our commercial world, but it also comes with a book that tells of Christ’s birth. I very much hope that those receiving will look and read and understand that Christmas has a far deeper meaning than all the gadgets you can now buy. I’ve given a 5star rating as I hope it will be all I hope it will be.

Buy these for grandchildren so that they hear again the true meaning of Christmas. They enjoy the story but state that the chocolates don’t taste as good as main manufacturers

We have 2 grandchildren living in Rwanda and need to post very early. It was great to find these on sale in late September. I send the “ Real Meaning of Christmas Calendars” every year. The children love them and I am very content that they see and read about the birth of Jesus.

Always a winner with my grandchildren! And even though some are now at senior school, they’re definitely not too grown up for an advent calendar - especially when there a tasty chocolate treat every day!

I bought this calendar for my grandchildren last year 2023. Is this year's calendar the same as last year or is it different?

The designs and booklets are different (but similar) each year.
