For anyone curious about genetics and its impact.

"Unravelling DNA" helps you understand genetic changes.

You can make informed choices for your family's future.

Discover how advances in genetics impact your relationships and values in this insightful book that blends science with Christian principles.

We are living through a genetic revolution that is affecting fundamental aspects of our beliefs, values and daily lives. Genetics has the power to change the nature of what it is to be human. This novel technology affects our family life, the way societies function, the nature of our planet and even how we see ourselves. From discovering our ancestry, to genetic selection of our partners and children, through our healthcare, justice systems, the food on our plates, access to jobs, insurance and education, and including the existential threat to our planet, genetics is having a transformative impact.

These advances in DNA science are progressing at a breathtaking rate, providing both dramatic benefits and some serious societal consequences. The advances, often combined with advances in artificial intelligence, raise complex ethical, personal and societal issues. Yet despite the implications, few of us understand the science or appreciate the deep consequences, benefits and risks for our collective future. This book aimed at non-experts describes in everyday language the full scope of the rapid advances in genetics but goes further by providing readers with the confidence and tools to form opinions and make decisions.

Founded on Christian values, the book explores how genetic advances will affect four vital areas of relationships: with self, family, society and the world we live in. The "relationship test" is valuable because relationships are: a) a fundamental part of being human and thus universally relevant; b) the vehicle by which, in the image and likeness of God, we love others; c) able to accommodate future advances, extending the relevance and shelf life of the book. This focus on relationships ensures the book remains rooted in the sorts of practical challenges we all face in this new "genetic age".

There are a number of features that are aimed to enable non-experts to understand the importance of this area of science:

  • Provides informed and trustworthy information and opinion based on the author's international experience in genetics research.
  • Covers the full range of genetic advances while rooting the science in applications to everyday life.
  • Provides a Christian framework which encourages thought, reflection and decision-making based on clearly presented principles and values.
  • Provides a flexible approach which is able to accommodate future advances in genetics thus extending the shelf-life of the book.
  • Uses accessible concepts and language, together with illustrations drawn from popular media coverage (in films, news stories, popular culture, history, etc), common life experiences and my career as a leading scientist internationally.
  • Enables personal decision-making and promotes collective Church engagement to shape the future applications of genetics globally.

If you are interested in how a Christian can live and contribute effectively in the genetic age, or just want to understand what this all means now and for the future, this book is the answer.

I came at this book as a non-scientist (at least beyond A-level!) but someone with an interest in the significant societal shifts that genetic advances will bring about in UK society and societies around the world, and some training in Christian theological ethics. The book is written in an accessible and yet suitably demanding way by a respected professional in the field, who bridges both the scientific research and the world of regulation and international cooperation through his work at WHO. What is notable is that he brings some clear and nuanced Christian ethical thinking to the field, putting forward a relational framework within which to assess new developments. To non-scientists like myself, the analogy of DNA to computer code that can be read, copied, edited and saved was extremely helpful. The ethical assessments are helpfully organised into four chapters: relationship with self, with family, with society and with the world, respectively. There is a helpful set of endnotes with references to all the sources informing the science and ethical analysis. Could it be improved? It's hard to see how there could be a better book at this accessible level and indeed even established voices in the world of Christians in science endorse it for its originality, creativity, and insight. There could have been perhaps some further engagement with Christian ethicists writing about suffering and disability, such as Stanley Hauerwas and most recently Brian Brock and John Swinton. But this is perhaps a counsel of perfection, or more positively framed, an opportunity to anyone who would like to bring the wisdom of scientific understanding to the conversation in Christian pastoral and theological ethics.

Chris Wild's book fans into flame my praise of our Creator. In the words of Psalm 139: \[13\] For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. \[14\] I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. From a lifetime's work Chris unpacks some of the wonder of those works for us. We live in a a world where the moral compass is endlessly spinning and we can end up dizzy and confused. This book is an excellent anchor in the complex field of DNA. The writers own anchor is his own unwavering faith in the creator God forged over many decades. Often Christians feel ill-equipped to contribute to the debate surrounding anything to do with science and DNA, but this book definitely equips the person of faith to speak with as much, if not more confidence than everyone else on matters concerning DNA. Our DNA is a 'wonderful' thing that should be handled with 'fear' . \[in the sense of awe, honour and respect\] As a non-specialist myself, but someone with an interest in science, I have found the book easy to follow and enjoyable to read. Chris brings it alive with many anecdotes and insights from his years as a Christian vitally involved in science applied for the benefit of others. It is not a book of dry theory but rooted in all of our stories. It feeds my worship as I'm sure it will yours.
