Erwin W. Lutzer’s ‘The Cross and the Crescent’ uses real stories, biblical imperatives and informed insight to take a serious and level headed look at the questions Christians are asking faced with the growing influence of Islam in the world today. Writing in his foreword, Dr Samuel Ezra Naaman of the Department of World Mission, Moody Institute, Chicago sums up the problem of that Christianity face in understanding Islam: “At its beginning… because some of its teachings are similar to Christianity, early Christians mistook Islam as a sect of Christianity.” Later, Luther described the core teachings of Islam as: “vehemently opposed to the teachings of Christianity.” Yet Dr Lutzer gives hope that Christians can actively engage with Muslims; infact, he writes, disengagement, is no an option.
