For those seeking deeper understanding of faith and disability

Explores blindness in theology to challenge misconceptions

You will gain new perspectives on faith and inclusion

The Tactile Heart offers profound insights into faith and blindness.
The Tactile Heart is a collection of theological essays on relating blindness and faith and developing a theology of blindness that makes a constructive contribution to the wider field of disability theology. John Hull looks at key texts in the Christian tradition, such as the Bible, written as a text for sighted people, and at hymns, which often use blindness as a metaphor for ignorance and explores how these can be read by blind people.

I've always warmed to Helen Keller's popular adage, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." Here John Hull offers us something unique and weighty in the exploration of blindness and faith. The Tactile Heart is a rare and robust set of theological essays that explore fragility, brokenness, fear and disability. Hull develops a framework of thought that makes a valuable contribution to the wider field of disability theology. The author journeys through key texts in the Christian tradition, literality, metaphor and much wisdom. Hull urges that a theology of disability originates in the imperfect of our divinely created human plurality. His offering of hymnology is particularly insightful and offers a fresh springboard of usefulness and application. The chapter about the blind disciple and the sighted Saviour, for me, was one of the strongest parts. The distinctive humanity and the engagement with difference was an appreciated take-away. The embodied theology, bodily metaphors and Christward gaze gently permeates all with a redemptive grace. This is a rare and worthwhile addition to the printed press. This is graciously reasoned and warmly constructed. It's well worthy of your time.
