Relating the witness of Romanian Christians who endured imprisonment, torture, and ideological persecution under Communism, Alexandru Popescu reflects on the struggle between spiritual freedom and the destructive powers that seek to corrupt and dehumanize humanity. Through the experiences of figures such as Radu M?rculescu and Victor Iliescu, he explores how faith survived in the midst of terror, and how the vision of the Cross and the heavenly Jerusalem sustained those who resisted the attempt to erase both Christian belief and human dignity.
These essays combine Orthodox theology, philosophical reflection, and historical testimony in a searching examination of evil, freedom, repentance, and the ‘diabolic’ distortions of modern totalitarianism. Popescu presents tradition not as nostalgia or cultural habit but as a living participation in the Divine life through which humanity and the created world are transfigured in Christ. Serious, penetrating, and spiritually uncompromising, these essays offer a profound meditation on suffering, resistance, and the enduring power of faith in the face of oppression.
