This is a modern take on classical spirituality, but the author's experience in the field of mental health and spiritual direction, and his work with L'Arche, are reflected in his approach. He focuses more on the process of dwelling in the experience of darkness and difficulty--what he refers to as the "middle space"--rather than a treatise on the Dark Night of the Soul, accepting and overcoming it. He feels that this "middle space" has been neglected and is worth exploring.
