"SOUL FORCE for Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. held divergent meanings rooted in their very different cultural realities as well as experiences which influenced their distinctive strategies regarding SOCIAL CHANGE. Gandhi's "Satyagraha" (holding firm to truth) strategy is a more one-stage means-oriented approach in which ahimsa (love or nonviolence) seeks to minimize coercive action & physical force as well as reliance on the enforcing of law to create social change. Gandhi sees suffering love to be inherently powerful and capable of changing hearts and oppressive systems. King's strategy of Militant Nonviolence is more a two-stage (ends-oriented) approach in which coercive physical force can enforce laws to stop harmful behavior -- leaving love to later change hearts. King does not see love or nonviolence as inherently powerful, believing only love guided by power can change oppressive systems and bring about greater justice. Exploring how these amazing people BOTH agree AND disagree with one another may serve to help each of us clarify how to become more integrated & innovative as well as radical agents of revolutionary change ourselves.
