The 48 stories in the book A Day in the Life of a Pair of Trousers and Other Stories were written to be used in worship services and on other occasions. They were designed to be portable and able to be produced at a moment's notice in churches where the presence of children could not be guaranteed.

Since it was first published, the book has also been bought as a story book in its own right. Indeed, children have been reading it, with the intention of working out each story's message before they get to its end.
