A valuable insider perspective from two men who have been acclaimed for their sharp thinking and warm pastoral hearts.

This book looks at the relationship between scholarship and pastoral ministry. Piper centres on the importance of scholarship and academic pursuits in his role as pastor. Carson, conversely, focuses on the importance of pastoral ministry in his career as a scholar.

An interesting blend of testimony, insight and teaching, this book challenges those in ministry to think carefully and holistically about their calling. An introduction by Owen Strachan and a conclusion by David Mathis provide context and application.

John Piper (DTh, University of Munich) is pastor for preaching and vision at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. He is the author of numerous books, including Desiring God and Don't Waste Your Life.

D. A. Carson (PhD, Cambridge University) is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. A former pastor and itinerant minister, he has authored or edited more than fifty books.

'Few books are so needed as this. Recapturing the vision of the pastor as scholar and the scholar as pastor is crucial for the health of the church. Who would not want to read John Piper and D. A. Carson as they reflect on this calling? This is one of the most encouraging and helpful books I have seen in a long time. If you are a pastor, read it. If you have a pastor, put it in his hands.' - R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Theological academia and pastoral praxis can be unintentional enemies of each other. Piper & Carson offer something meaningful here in the tension of this in between space. Paul rightly describes one of the offices of the church as “Pastor-Teacher” in Ephesians 4. Both Jesus and Paul were able scholars in their own right, yet cared deeply in ways which are vital models for pastoral leadership today. Many have the impression that all the pastor needs is a Bible and the Holy Spirit. There is a certain populist appeal, but it leads to unprepared pastors doing serious damage in churches. Faith and feeling, reason and response were some of the treasures of this quality if but brief title. These are original talks rescanned in a book format and with other authors included readers might well feel cheated of the Piper and Carson authorial emphasis, as they only submit one chapter each! Undoubtedly an encouragement to good scholarship in the pastorate, or pastoral concern in the academy. Truly unique and fresh!
