Helpful Truth in Past Places
This is a book on Biblical counselling. Its aim is help those involved with counselling to help those who are suffering psychological problems, such as fear, anxiety and depression.
There are many such books today, but what makes this book special is that the author bases his advice on the writings of leading Puritans such as John Owen, Jeremiah Burroughs, and Jonathan Edwards.
Each chapter is a distillation of the teaching contained a well known Puritan book and seeks to answer a specific issue such as: “Why is this happening to me?” and “No one understands my problems”.
As you read this book you will realise that the world of the Puritans was not that different from ours: the stresses and strains are the same; all that has changed is the labels we give them.
You will also soon conclude that the Puritans were masters at applying Biblical truth and principles to the difficulties of life. They wrote with deep compassion and an understanding of the human condition. Their advice is sane, realistic and above all scriptural. Dr. Deckard has unearthed a goldmine of wisdom. All Christians, but especially pastors and counsellors will benefit from reading this work. Highly recommended.
