To examine the origins, meanings and forms of the nativity scene custom and tradition, and to link them to the biblical Christmas narratives, requires us to take a fresh look at something that seems so familiar to us. The Christmas story according to Luke seeks to draw attention to the message that, from the moment of his birth, Jesus was recognised and accepted by the poor and the despised as the Son of God. It seems important that pupils explore the elements that make up a traditional nativity scene in the Salzkammergut and their arrangement, and that they can immerse themselves in a nativity scene through creative work. A celebration in which these results can be incorporated and new inspiration provided rounds off the whole experience.
