The USAF Chaplain Service is being transformed to meet the spiritual needs of our troops while they endeavor to fulfill the obligations of the 2002 National Security Strategy. The Global War on Terrorism and several other global contingencies are placing greater demands on our nation's airmen. As the chaplaincy leans forward to meet today's spiritual needs, they are finding several new challenges. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State and other very disgruntled Americans and military members are becoming less tolerant of the Christian expression of faith due to their interpretation of the First Amendment. That explains why some, in America, and in the military are no longer comfortable with open expressions of the Christian faith (such as commanders sharing their faith preference with troops, public prayer at base events, evangelism, base Christmas tree lighting, squadron Christmas parties etc.)
