A major treatment of the early history of the Evangelical Movement in the Church of England in the eighteenth century, showing how evangelicalism was distinct from the Methodist revival under Wesley and Whitefield. The author calls it ""a religious and social study,"" placing the movement in its historical setting and taking note especially of the influences which affected it. The book offers a valuable contribution to the study of evangelicalism and the relationship between Anglicanism and Nonconformity. Leonard Elliott Elliott-Binns (1885-1963) was ordained into the Church of England in 1913, serving as chaplain of Ridley Hall for two years before going into parish work. He was a curate in Plymouth, a vicar in Plymouth, Davenport, and West Ham, and a canon of Truro. Most of his life as a parish priest was spent in the west country. In 1958 he served as the president of the Society for Old Testament Study.
