Walking Across the Day is a vivid, elegiac, and deeply human collection from Vancouver poet d. n. simmers, whose work moves through memory, loss, family histories, the Downtown Eastside, the natural world, and the long arc of a life lived in full witness. These poems are grounded in lived experience-childhood hauntings, addiction, recovery, aging, grief, and the ghosts that follow us through time.
Across these pages, simmers revisits the landscapes that shaped him: Prince George bunkhouses where "morning spinning dust outside and inside the windows... dancing with insects, in the first light of morning" ; the Kitsilano shoreline where "the sea would slush and hiss near the edge of the sugar shaped sand" ; and the East Side streets where "overdoses. Everywhere. Eyes of the dead leering out of their skeleton faces" .
The poems move between tenderness and brutality, between the living and the dead, between the remembered and the half-forgotten. In "I Remember," a child plays with "the ghost of the old woman in the basement" ; in "See-Saw," the poet confronts the pull of addiction; in "Gold Tooth," he recalls a friend who "needed the money so took it out and sold the gold" .
Simmers' voice is unadorned, direct, and emotionally resonant. He writes with the clarity of someone who has lived through storms and come out carrying both the scars and the stories. His poems honour the forgotten, the broken, the joyful, the ordinary, and the extraordinary moments that shape a life.
A long-time contributor to the literary community, simmers was published in The Capilano Review, SubTerrain, riverbabble, Monterey Poetry Review, and many others. His previous books-Food Truck Elements of Shadowed Lights, The Red School Bus, and Traveling Detours and U-Turns-established him as a poet of grit, compassion, and lived truth.
Walking Across the Day stands as a final testament to a writer who understood the fragile intersections of memory, time, and the human spirit. A powerful, intimate collection that ensures d. n. simmers' voice continues to walk beside us.
