    Benedictine Monasticism is known for the welcome given to the visitor. What is this charism? How does it work? How is it experienced? How can it become part of my life? These are some of the questions this book tries to answer. 'Hospitality...demands that you let the people you are serving into your heart' (p. 20). It 'teaches me to work at becoming someone who is easy to be with, as either guest or host', so that it 'becomes a way of life (p. 110). Nonetheless, it's not a matter of learning and applying Benedictine ideas - being truly a hospitable person, in the fullest way, will happen without one realising it (p.226). An 'Introduction' is followed by ten chapters which gently explore aspects of relationships within the general framework of the practice of hospitality. There are plenty of examples - one gets to know Father Homan's Community and Mrs Pratt's family and friends. We are not presented with a blueprint; neither are we heckled if we cannot make the grade straightaway. We are encouraged and helped to think through our own ways of relating to one another, and to examine what may be holding us back - or making us too forward! Throughout, while it may not be explicit, the Christian reader will know that it is Christ who is welcomed in any act of hospitality, just as it is Christ who is also the host. This book joins many others which show the relevance of Benedictine spirituality in every day life.
