For those interested in Christian history and pilgrimage

Explores the little-known connection of Mary to Provence

You will uncover a rich tradition of faith and history

Discover the captivating story of Mary Magdalen in Provence with this intriguing book.
This book concentrates on the venerable tradition that links Mary to the heart of la Provence Verte. To the cave in the massif of Saint-Baume where she is said to have ended her days as a hermit, after helping evangelise the area; and to the coffin in the nearby town of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume which is said to contain her bones. Places which for centuries have been a magnet for pilgrims and which remain centres of pilgrimage and spiritual activity today. Provence and Mary Magdalen-two endlessly fascinating subjects. Yet the tradition linking the two is hardly known in the English-speaking world. Here-in a quest both spiritual and historical-is its first full-length examination. Could there be any truth in it? Michael Donley has worked as a Lecturer in English in several countries, and has previously published on French literature and music criticism.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This book subtitled The Coffin and the Cave is a serious and painstakingly researched examination of the legend that Mary Magdalen with several companions came to Provence after the resurrection of Jesus and ended her life there. This is not a fanciful piece of credulous hagiography. The many fables and traditions associated with Mary are closely scrutinised with reference to the written historical and romantic literature of the last thousand years. Donley examines the question of whether the Mary Magdalen legend is a composite of the three Marys mentioned in scripture or whether she was a single individual. Objective proof is impossible, but Donley asserts that legend is its own fact and that the people of Provence have always believed that her tomb and her cave are there where pilgrimages have been made for centuries. No amount of intellectual scholarship will efface the intense spiritual conviction of the people of Provence. Apart from the scholarly investigation the book is also an interesting guide book to Provence and its people. This is a valuable addition to the investigation of the Magdalen mystery.
