This is often referred to as the "intermediate state," where the soul exists apart from the physical body but remains alive and in communion with Christ. For instance, Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:8, "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." Similarly, in Philippians 1:23, Paul expresses his desire "to depart and be with Christ," which he describes as "better by far." These verses suggest that after death, believers are spiritually present with God while awaiting their bodily resurrection.

The ultimate hope for Christians lies not merely in a disembodied existence but in the resurrection of the body.
