In ancient times, pottery held significant value in the daily lives of people. A closer study of the Bible shows that pottery and the art of pottery-making were commonly referenced throughout Scripture. God often used the imagery and process of pottery to communicate with His people. At times, prophets-under divine inspiration-also used references to pottery to deliver powerful spiritual messages.
One notable example is found in Jeremiah 18, where God instructed the prophet Jeremiah to go to the potter's house so He could speak to him. This instruction raises a question: why did God require Jeremiah to visit the potter's house before revealing His message? While God certainly had the power to speak to Jeremiah anywhere, sending him to observe the potter at work may have been intended to give him a vivid, firsthand understanding of the message's depth. It allowed Jeremiah to witness a symbolic act that would bring clarity and emphasis to what God wanted to communicate to the Israelites.
