For those seeking guidance in their spiritual life

Helps you navigate life’s challenges and choices

You will find clarity and joy in your spiritual path

Compass and Stars offers thoughtful meditations to guide your spiritual journey.

After 28 years in the religious life, Martin L. Smith left the monastic path. ' - I took my leave of it for good and found myself for the first time facing the challenge of finding my own way. No one was shaping my life for me: now to find my own bearings, in a new life and a new city, with possibilities yet unknown - ' The reflections and musings in Compass and Stars are designed to help readers find their bearings in the life of the spirit today.

With humour and pastoral sensitivity Martin L. Smith reveals the staleness and oppressive nature of many of our spiritual practices at a time when, more than ever, we need to stand back and let the fresh winds of the Spirit blow in our lives. From the spirituality of shopping to social justice, vocational discernment and channel surfing, the reflections in this book are designed to delight and make us think.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Lyrical, gentle and yet deeply thoughtful and probing are just some of the words and phrases that come to mind after reading the forty reflections contained within this book. The word I would use that best sums up these three page contemplations of spirituality and daily life, is intelligent. Even when dealing with the vice of channel surfing and the casual way we take the Lord’s name in vain it is done in a flowing, erudite, witty, and intelligent way, with a real grasp of showing complex issues in a simple way, illuminating the everyday in a spiritual manner and awakening the spiritual in the everyday moments. There are contemplations here on lack of faith, on day planners, shopping, anxiety and healing, on mobile phones, politics, prayer and many more short pieces skilfully weaving the mundane with the spiritual in such an insightful way that we are left with an aching awareness of how much we miss and how much we can yet gain. A truly wonderful forty day companion that will at times make the reader go ‘Ouch!’ and ‘Oh!’ and ‘maybe’, and above all leave us feeling just a little more aware of those times and places where faith and everyday intersect in our lives.
