Modern Women in Prophecy by Jay E. Kellogg is a 1933 evangelical-pentecostal critique of changing attitudes toward women, morality, religion, and social life, interpreted through biblical prophecy and the author's reading of contemporary events. Kellogg examines women in Creation and the Fall, the "Scarlet Woman" of Revelation, modern religious movements, Christian Science, Spiritism, Theosophy, Seventh-day Adventism, Modernism, and what he regards as the emergence of a modern "Babylon." He argues that declining sexual and moral restraint, changing fashions, the rise of "free love," popular entertainment, smoking, and changing expectations concerning marriage and domestic life are signs of spiritual and social decline. The book also discusses women's increasing participation in industry and the church, contrasting contemporary social changes with the author's ideal of Christian womanhood centered on marriage, motherhood, prayer, faith, and the home. In its final chapters, Kellogg argues from biblical prophecy that women may legitimately preach, prophesy, evangelize, and exercise spiritual gifts, citing Deborah, Huldah, Anna, Priscilla, and the prophecy of Joel concerning the outpouring of the Spirit upon "sons and daughters."
