Drifter Dane James, alias the Deacon, cut the noose o young Davy Hart and saved Davy's life-even became his mentor. This crack-shot kid, with a scar around his neck and ruined voice box, gains a reputation as the Whisperer. He loves Delia but must go seek vengeance for the murder of his ma.

With Davy gone, the Deacon follows his dream. He, Rico (his partner), Delia, and close friends travel from New Orleans to California on a wagon train. On the trail, they experience intrigue, romance, adventure, and even murder.
