A survivor of Mosby's partisan raid on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad, Salina Rose Hastings finds herself in Culpeper Court House. Not even an invitation to a celebratory ball featuring time in the company of Jeremy Barnes, her betrothed, can dispel the menacing undercurrents of war.

Unable to wait on dreams postponed by yet another campaign, Salina makes a reluctant journey north to Pennsylvania, only to find herself caught squarely in the path of two converging armies and a three-day battle at Gettysburg-a battle which would come to be known as the "High Water Mark" for the Confederacy.
