Set in 33 C.E. during Pontius Pilate's brutal rule over Judea, this gripping historical mystery follows a reluctant Roman investigation that will challenge everything the investigator believes about justice and mercy.
When Praetor Servius Valerius Pius is murdered in a Jerusalem marketplace, Emperor Tiberius dispatches the victim's dissolute son, Aquilus, to complete his father's interrupted investigation. A junior politically appointed tribune more interested in wine and women than duty, the reluctant Aquilus hopes for a routine inquiry into provincial corruption.
Instead, he discovers a powder keg ready to explode. Pilate rules through fear, squeezing unreasonable taxes from the Jews while religious tensions simmer between the Romans, the Sanhedrin priests and violent Zealots and assassins. Unsure of how to conduct an investigation, Aquilus relies on the savvy of his father's slave to conduct the investigation until he is unexpectedly left on his own.
Trying to determine what Pilate has been plotting, along with who murdered his father and why, Aquilus finds that at the center of the mystery is the question of what happened to Yeshua-a man whose identify is unclear to Aquilus. As he digs deeper, he uncovers evidence that Pilate may have orchestrated an elaborate deception involving the man as a way to fool both Rome and the Jews.
Helped by Miriam, a Jewish woman whose family fell victim to Roman brutality, and Rivkah, a prostitute whose loyalties are questionable, Aquilus is manipulated by enemies on all sides, including a morally troubled centurion, Marcellus and Shimon, the enigmatic leader of the Zealots. The young investigator, learning on the job, must navigate the treacherous political landscape of occupied Palestine as Zealot assassins, corrupt officials, and questionable allies all threaten him and his mission.
The investigation forces Aquilus to confront not only his father's murder but his relationship with the man and how it shaped his life. When he encounters the enigmatic teacher Toma, whose wisdom challenges everything he believes about power and justice, the young Roman must choose between vengeance and mercy.
Rich in historical detail and political intrigue, this novel brings first-century Palestine to vivid life while exploring timeless themes of corruption, faith, and transformation. One man's search for truth becomes a journey that forever changes his understanding of justice.
