Fourteen-year-old Dayton was tired of feeling like a loser. He dreamed of becoming a somebody, someone his peers would admire.

Promoted from middle school, he wondered if anyone would miss him if he didn't show up for high school the following fall.

His grades were average. He was too uncoordinated to make the middle school basketball or baseball teams and had no apparent artistic talents. Girls ignored him. He even felt his parents ignored him, focusing on his older athletic brother and younger sister.

Why couldn't he have his ten minutes of fame like those 1000s of teen want-to-be rock stars who post their videos online? Perhaps he could become a hero by rescuing a dog from a burning house or pushing a child out of the path of an oncoming car.Dayton had one thing going for him, his classmate and close friend, Nickel-Boy. At school, they knew Nickel-Boy as a spoiled rich kid. To Dayton, he was a friend he could confide in and share his frustrations and dreams.

School was out for the summer. Dayton and Nickel Boy had no summer plans: no jobs, camps, or planned vacation trips. After a heated argument with his mother and with Nickel-Boy's encouragement, Dayton runs away from home with Nickel-Boy. Their destination was Nags Head, North Carolina, a vacation beach town on the Atlantic Ocean, 290 miles away.
