Rick Jones's plane is engulfed in a cloud of ash from a sudden eruption of Mount Rainier, and the plane crash lands. Rick and nine fellow passengers are rescued from the toxic ash, only to discover that they are now trapped in what they are told is an angel's workstation.

As Rick and the survivors discover the wonders of their new home, they come to realize that the angels have the technology to avert all earthly disasters and cure all human diseases, but mostly choose not to. While Rick believes in the goodness of the angels, other survivors decide that the angels are sadistic aliens that need to be destroyed.

Aided by Amanda, a survivor he has fallen in love with, Rick must race against time to save the angels and the survivors he has befriended.
