Adam and Eve are tormented by Satan regarding their newfound bodily awareness, lustful urges, and sense of shame. They have been told by God that they should "be fruitful and multiply", but they have absolutely no idea how to do this. Seizing on their inexperience and naivete regarding sex, Satan tempts them mercilessly to forswear holiness and to yield to their physical desires. The temptations are meant to overcome their innate sense of godliness and prey upon their tendency to sin (inherited from "The Fall"). The goal of Satan is to usurp the authority of Adam and Eve as the caretakers of the world, and establish himself as the master of this earthly realm.
