Charles 'Bert' Horton (1895-1976), who served on the Western Front as a stretcher bearer in the Royal Army Medical Corps, wrote his memoir in 1970, as he felt that even then the memories of those who had served in the Great War were becoming lost to modern generations. It has remained unpublished until now. Bert's story is a fascinating document, full of first-hand detail - an authentic account of the sights and sounds, the fears and the spirit of hundreds of thousands of young soldiers at the Battles of the Somme and Ypres. With the approval of Bert's family, Dale Le Vack has compiled this book around the memoir - editing his text for clarity, but leaving the actual content untouched - and adding substantial text to give it context and to give the book a fuller feel. He has prefaced some of Bert's chapters with editorial introductions (see sample below), and added a Part Two in which he has researched accounts of many other veterans for chapters on life in the trenches, life in a field hospital, conscientious objectors and short biographies of a number of other forgotten heroes.
