Interview with Emily Owen, author of You Say

It is easy to look at ourselves and just see our failings and imperfections. Yet God looks at us and sees us differently. He sees us positively, as we really are – unconditionally loved and accepted by him.

In her new book You Say, Emily Owen seamlessly weaves together reflections, prayers, personal stories and the encouraging 'voice' of God to help us move away from damaging negative images of ourselves and step into the freedom that understanding our God-given identity brings.

Emily, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I know what it is to be broken, and I know what it is to meet God there.

I like candles, and rainbows, and coffee with friends.

My niece once asked me, incredulously; ‘what goes on in your head?!’ I think what she meant was; ‘your wit astounds me, dear aunt.’

I’ve lost count of how many surgeries I’ve had.

I like finding joy in every day.

Why did you decide to write You Say?

I was asked what was on my heart, and I immediately knew the answer: identity in Christ.

I’ve had many challenges and changes in my life – I write about some of them in You Say - and, over time, I have learned to cling to the thing that can’t change: my identity in Christ. I don’t get to define me, and nor does the world. I am who God says I am. The same is true for all of us.

Who have you written this book for?

I hope it will be an encouragement to whoever picks it up. Perhaps especially people who struggle to know/believe how wonderfully God sees them, and to adopt it for themselves.

There are lots of devotional books available, what makes your book different?

That’s a tough question! Hm. It’s the first 101 book written by me?!

You Say combines styles (poetry, Biblical reflection, fiction, etc) but retains one focal point throughout: identity in Christ. Every day there is a one-word affirmation to hold onto. It’s written by someone who once refused to look in a mirror.

Perhaps that makes it different, I don’t know.

Reviewers have called You Say:

‘Inspirational gold! Her unique writing style is refreshing’

‘Profound in its simplicity’

‘I love how honestly you share your story’

‘Offers us some wonderful insights, including surprises along the way’

You imagine the voice of God speaking affirmations throughout the devotions. Why is this so important to you?

It’s how God speaks to me, and it is my privilege to share that.

With a certain irony, I ‘hear’ God more clearly now than I did before I lost my hearing. Is that because I lost my hearing? I don’t know but, as we learn to stop focussing on other voices that surround us, His voice becomes clearer.

How did you go about writing these devotions?

The very first part I wrote is the meditation found in the introduction.

When it came to the book itself, I began by identifying (!) the 101 identity words. Then I realised I had more than 101, so cut them down. With the word as a starting point, I then drew in Bible verses and thoughts to accompany it.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who is really struggling with issues around low self-esteem or self-worth?

In my experience, such struggles cause us to focus inwards. I would suggest – again from personal experience – focussing instead on how God sees you. Not negating the low sense of self-worth but not focussing on it, either. I’m not saying that is a quick fix, but I do find that the more I refuse to not believe what God says about me, the more I stop letting my voice drown His voice out, the more I can take His seeing on board.

What was the most challenging element of writing this book?

Layout and wordcount. I have never gone over a wordcount before, so to adhere to the strict word count in this book proved tricky. I did go over the word count in some of the devotions, and it turns out I’m not a fan of deleting! I also tend to be quite particular about page layout, which wasn’t so possible here.

And what was the most rewarding element of writing this book?

Gaining new insights into Biblical passages. It’s my favourite thing about devotional writing, seeing different thoughts and passages come together.

What do you hope readers will most get out of reading this book?

A sense of their value. Affirmation. Gentle challenge. A new/renewed closeness with God. Joy. Lots of joy.

In one sentence, how would you describe You Say?

Learning to see ourselves as God sees us, and to live in that reality.

In a nutshell You Say is a super devotional - Emily Owen asks the question of God that even a lot of established Christians are either too afraid to ask, wouldn't think to ask, or wouldn't believe God would answer. Jesus asked Peter, 'Who do you say I am?'. In this compact , A5 sized devotional Emily dares to flip that question and ask God who He says she is, and in doing so asks the question for all His children. In her darkest times, Emily has found light in God's Word, and has shared it here. Profound, thought provoking, yet uncomplicated, each of the 101 devotions is headed with one word, such as 'Beautiful'. Emily then takes a passage of Scripture, holds it up to the light and shows us what God is saying to us through it. When we see ourselves as 'weathered' through life, age, disease or disability, God sees us as beautiful, still made in His image. You Say is full of Scriptural truths that Emily has found for herself – truths worth sharing when so many of God's children live under a cloud of poor self esteem, or self worth. At the very least Emily shows us how very positively God feels about each of his children; something we all need reminding of. Scripture tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and this devotional encourages just that. It's the perfect bedside companion. Read it back to front, or dip in at random. Read it over and over again, and really understand the wonderful truth of how the Father sees us, the truth of our identity in Christ. You won't be disappointed.

When I heard about the book and its title, and having read other books by Emily Owen, I knew I was going to enjoy this one. Understanding who we are in Christ is something which is close to my own heart. We live in a world where so often our identity is based on the wrong things, such as our work, our education, our position in society, all the things that society says is important. Sometimes our identity is based on the words which have been spoken over us by others, such as “You’re a mistake, a failure, unloveable.” These things have a huge impact on the way we live our lives. In my opinion, Emily’s book is one which is much needed by all of us today. We need to know what God thinks about us, and we need to hear the truths He speaks over us. We need to have our identity founded in Him. We need to know we are loved by Him, that He has chosen us, that we are known, accepted, forgiven and so much more. These things and more are what we learn as we read “You Say”, Each devotion begins with a one or two word title, such as ‘Special Possession’, ‘Beloved’ or ‘Seen’. Followed by a verse from the Bible which relates to the word. Emily shares stories from her own life experience and from Scripture. What I particularly like is when she writes using God’s voice, because it’s as though God is speaking directly into my heart. Each devotion ends with a prayer, but just before that, with the words: “Look with my eyes. What do you see?” And then with a reminder of the word for that particular day’s devotion, such as ‘Beloved’. I believe Emily’s beautiful words and reflections in “You Say” are life-giving and healing. They will be just what our hearts and minds need to hear and know. When we understand and grasp these things, we will live with far more confidence, not in ourselves, but who we are in Christ and we will be able to live out these truths. This is why we need this book. I recommend this book to everyone. At one time or another we have probably all found that our identity has been in something other than in Christ. Maybe for some of us, our identity is still found in the wrong things and we will never be fully at peace and confident in who we are until we find our identity in Christ. I believe this book will be especially good for those who may have been wounded in the past by what others have said about them.

The devotions are relatable to everyday life, with some resonating with your personal situation more than others. They are easy to read, short starting with a bible verse. You have the ability to choose a devotion at random to read on a particular day or you can work through the book from the start reading a devotion a day. At the end of the devotion, it goes back to the original question ‘Look with my eyes, what do you see?’. This helps us to think about this, how God sees us. Whilst we Acknowledge how others see us, we would know God tells us the truth even if it is hard to see or believes at times due to what is happening in our personal lives or current situations. I like that it has a notes section at the end of the book where it says part of the devotion is from, this helps us to be able to explore the story and topic further. In the devotion teamed it talks about the lost sheep, at times we might feel like the lost sheep, alone and scared trying to find our way back home, physically and/or spiritually. You Say has a devotion for everyone at different times, I highly recommend to others to read as a devotional. I have enjoyed reading the different devotionals, thinking and reflecting on what I have read.
