“There are no Europeans left on the Hill; we should have gone too! Everyone else was evacuated early this morning! We must all go immediately!” The words came tumbling out.

There was no time to argue; it was now known clearly that the Japanese Army had invaded Malaya and was rapidly making its way southwards. In the surrounding area everyone had fled. There was no traffic, no movement anywhere, just silence.

“Darlings, we are in trouble,” Patricia’s Mother explained, “but Jesus promised that ‘if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven’. So we can ask for the Lord’s help now and know He is hearing us and will answer us.”
As the family prayed together, six-year old Patricia felt a deep peace. “It’s alright now,” she realised, “God is in charge!”

The Second World War and the events that followed shaped Patricia’s life as her family travelled from country to country and across three continents. From tigers and bandits to submarines and war camps, the stories of her family highlight the risks, dangers and sufferings experienced in Asia and Africa during that important historical period. Yet we also see how faith in Jesus can guide a family through every trial.
