George Mackay Brown was as enigmatic a man you could find - even by the standard of poets...and Orcadians. Notoriously guarded about his personal life, and particularly his religious and spiritual life, his poems were infused with his acute awareness of the divine and the mystical. His conversion to Catholicism, on an island almost exclusively populated by Protestants, and his obsession with the great Orkney Saint and martyr, Magnus, fed into all his work and his public personality.
