While it is often seen as a book of rules or models for morality, it is, in fact, a book of relationships, a series of images for identity.We only understand the wonderful stories of the Bible when we seek to put ourselves into them, identifying with those who have gone before us in the faith.

When we do this, and when we read the stories honestly, we find that we are challenged and even scandalized by God's word. The stories are not tame and genteel. Some stories, rightly understood, will shock us. But through all of them, we will come to discover the absolute wonder of a God who names, chooses, claims, and loves each of us.
