Ryan Tietz and Paul Elliott offer astute commentary on Obadiah and Habakkuk, respectively.
"[Obadiah] is a book that ultimately speaks to the church today, which means that it proclaims God's ongoing kingship, culminating in the first and second advents of Christ. Obadiah is a book whose message goes beyond his time" (p. 5). In Tietz' commentary, he looks at historical and geographical backgrounds and the rich use of Hebrew language, while reading through a canonical lens.
Elliott's commentary on Habakkuk notes the prophet's fervor and audacity as he, instead of calling out Israel for their sins, calls out God for His behavior. However, Elliott writes, "God has changed the heart of this hard-hearted prophet, so that he now lives by faith. Thus [Yahweh]—the righteous one, who makes many righteous (Is 51:11)—has made even Habakkuk into one of the righteous" (p. 3).
This work is a part of the Concordia Commentary series, which seeks to enable pastors, professors, and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the biblical text. This scholarly commentary series fully affirms the divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture as it emphasizes "that which promotes Christ" in each pericope.
