Amulet and Signet: Text as Dramatic Wardrobe in THE SONG OF SONGS

This work is a fascinating exploration of the most important verse in The Song of Solomon

"Set me as a seal (amulet) upon thine heart, as a seal (signet ring) upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame." The book represents a unique contribution to the literary-critical study of Song of Solomon 4:6 in three ways: - a critique of Aristotle's definition of "drama" as it relates to Solomon's amulet and signet ring;

• an exploration of biblical passages where adornment of clothing and jewelry symbolically "clothe" dramatic action; and,
• an analysis of Solomon's "amulet" and "signet ring" as associative images of the golden breastplate and onyx stones worn upon the High Priest's "heart" and "arm."
