This is the story of an encounter between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day. Angered that Jesus ate with "tax collectors and sinners," the Pharisees and Scribes questioned why He and His disciples were not fasting and praying instead of feasting with questionable people. The answer Jesus gave came in the form of three parables. In these parables, Jesus unapologetically declared that the faith He proclaimed was not that same as their faith. He came to offer something different. In this study, we will discuss the response of Jesus to the religious leaders of the day. We will compare their understanding of religion with the faith Jesus proclaimed. I hope that this study will challenge the reader to consider carefully the difference between a religion of law and works and the faith Jesus taught.
