Secular historians in the early part of the second century dismissed Jesus and his followers as troublemakers. But his influence continued to spread. Four New Testament writers help us to understand why. The gospels they compiled record the down-to-earth teachings of Jesus and describe his miracles, but in doing so, they paint a picture of his admirable character, his values and his worthy mission. This has meant his significance as the Messiah has extended down to the present day. In a world then dominated by Roman politics, Greek culture and Jewish religion, his appeal was universal and cross cultural.
