What Real Listeners Are Saying
‘Brian Doerkson and the Christians in his community take us into the loving but challenging presence of the Creator God who gave us his Son to be our model. It is a journey into intimacy that calls us to stand and build the foundations and walls of a life that will last for ever because it is rooted in the eternal values of God.’
- Roger Boon
‘Brian is a top artist with a warm heart for his Lord - no doubt about it.’
- Anton De Zeeuw
As always, Brian Doerksen moves my heart to worship. This album is very good. I was not disappointed.
- C. Way
‘If you love the Lord and want to pour out to Him your grateful heart for the love and mercy and grace that He has shown to you then do not hesitate to purchase this album. Thank you Brian for giving the church another album of pure worship to our God.’
- Michael Nathan
‘I was completely swept away with this cd. Brian Doerksen is a wonderful writer and musician. I love the way he sings and worships God in his music. There is not one song I didn't like on this CD. Holy, Holy, Holy God is one of my favorites. I love this cd and highly recommend it!’
- Pilar Arsenec
‘Brian Doerksen is famous for his many worship albums and original worship songs (e.g. 'Come, Now is the Time to Worship') sung the world over. The songs on this album keep up his high standard.’
- Bruce Ballard
‘This CD is made for personal listening. Even though this is largely a solo-sounding effort, there is no ego here. The entire album is worship-centric. Faithful One is my favourite song on this album. I highly recommend requesting this song on a Christian music station...I thought it was worth the price of the entire album alone.’
- Anonymous Listener (on ‘You Shine’)
‘Brian Doerksen is one of the foremost worship music writers of our day. He is honest, expressive and right on the money for putting words to music that allow us to worship God in whatever place we might find ourselves in. There is some classic material from his days at Vineyard (sorry to see him go!) and some new material that is just right there as far as meeting the needs of churches who seek to use the contemporary style with regard to worship.’
- Ben Schoffman
Eden Article: Brian Doerksen - Artist Profile
Brian Doerksen was born in 1965 in Abbotsford, British Columbia (Canada to the rest of us).
At the age of 19, he married his wife Joyce - they now have four daughters and two sons.
Brian was part of the Vineyard church movement - he taught on worship leading and songwriting, as well as recording his first albums. Doerksen is well respected in contemporary church culture and is recognised as inspiring and influencing the shift towards a ‘modern’ congregational singing style.
Doerksen’s most famous songs include ‘Refiner's Fire’ (1990), ‘Faithful One’ and ‘Come Now is the Time to Worship’ (1998). He has released six solo albums to date, and has appeared on more than forty other albums either with featured songs, in collaborations, or as part of the ‘Vineyard Music’ franchise.
Also an occasional author, Doerksen has penned some of his teachings on worship in order that a wider readership could be reached. If you wish to read these works, I recommend that you start with ‘Make Love, Make War: NOW is the Time to Worship’.
Now nearing fifty, Brian’s career in music is becoming increasingly quiet. He currently co-pastors a church in Matsqui Village, Canada, where his specific role relates to teaching and worship arts.
Eden Article: An Essential Study of Selected Songs
In this special article, I will review some of Brian Doerksen’s most influential songs in terms of the feel of the song itself (musically) and the lyrical content.
‘Refiner’s Fire’ - Fire was a hugely popular theme surrounding the Vineyard movement of the late eighties and early nineties. In this song, we as singers pray that God’s refining fire will adapt and change our hearts, sanctifying and making us holy, so we will be ready to do His will. The song itself is fairly mellow, but often sounds powerful especially when sung by congregations who can harmonise.
‘Faithful One’ - Another mellow track, this one has an exceptionally uplifting chorus. The singer declares ‘You are my rock in times of trouble, you lift me up when I fall down, all through the storm your love is the anchor, my hope is in You alone’. This song shares similarities with the type of songs written and released by Stuart Townend and the Gettys - strong exponents of the ‘modern hymn’.
‘Come, Now is the Time to Worship’ - Released in 1998, this song often features stronger electric guitar, bass and drum parts that mean it shares similarities with the kind of music still sung in churches who sing upbeat songs with full bands, such as Hillsong, Soul Survivor or Holy Trinity Brompton.
‘Hope of the Nations’ - Brian Doerksen’s enduring ability to write songs for the church to sing is displayed in this song, released in 2003. Doerksen’s own style continues to modernise, moving with times without losing the original lyrical content that gives it value. The chorus speaks of who Jesus is: ‘You are the hope living in us, you are the rock living in us, you are light shining for all the world to see.’
There are so many other songs written by Brian that I could write about, but I believe it’s time for you get listening for yourself - depending on which type of church you attend, you may have heard these great tunes before.
