What Are Light Parties?

What are light parties

As the nights draw in, many churches and families look for a positive, faith-focused alternative to traditional Halloween celebrations. Enter the Light Party! More than just a simple gathering, a Light Party is a fun, vibrant, and Christ-centred event that focuses on themes of light, hope, and joy. It’s a brilliant way for children to have a safe, fun night while celebrating Jesus as the Light of the World.

What are Light Parties?

A Light Party is a Church event, typically held around October 31st, designed to be an alternative to Halloween. Instead of focusing on darkness, ghosts, and spooks, the party is all about celebrating the positive message of Jesus being the light of the world (John 8:12).

The core idea is to replace the spooky with the spectacular. Kids are usually encouraged to dress up in bright colours, as their favourite Bible characters, or as anything that represents light, hope, or heroes. It's a fantastic outreach opportunity that brings the church community and local families together for an evening of faith and fun.

What Do You Do at a Light Party?

The beauty of a Light Party is its flexibility, but most events share a common structure filled with engaging, themed activities:

  1. Bright Decorations & Costumes: The environment is transformed with colour, glow sticks, fairy lights, and upbeat Christian music. Forget the scary masks; it’s all about captivating colours, superhero capes, or angelic attire!
  2. Games Centred on Light: Activities often involve light, such as glow-in-the-dark games, or treasure hunts using torches.
  3. A Simple Faith Message: A short, accessible talk or story time is central, focusing on a Bible passage about light, hope, and how Jesus brings light into the world’s darkness. You can also share a tract such as The Pumpkin Story for children to take home and read with their family.
  4. Uplifting Food: Treats are often themed around light and colour, think bright cupcakes, biscuits ready to be iced with bright colours, fruit skewers, or even glowing drinks served in a well-lit space. Oh, and lots and lots of sweets!
  5. Crafts & Creation: This is where children can express their creativity and take a tangible reminder of the event home.

Let There Be Light... Party Crafts!

Light Party crafts for kids are often the most memorable part of the evening. They provide a relaxed, hands-on activity that reinforces the theme of light and hope.

Popular crafts include:

  • Decorating small lanterns or jars with tissue paper and LED candles.
  • Creating 'Light of the World' sun-catchers which remind them to Shine Jesus' Light.
  • Making glowing pictures - Using glow in the dark paint, glitter glue and jewels to create their own light up masterpieces.
