Max Lucado Is Here to Help You Begin Again

Aaron Lewendon - Category Manager

Few Christian teachers are as widely read and loved as Max Lucado. He’s the loveable uncle of the Christian publishing world whose books are a touchstone of hope and encouragement for everyone. Through homespun stories and Biblical teaching, Max has helped millions of believers take comfort in Christ’s love.

The impact of Max's books come from one simple rule:

“What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?”

All of Max’s teaching is there to help believers find encouragement when it’s needed and hope for when life is tough. Many of Max’s life lessons are hard-won, coming from his own story and journey of faith.

Max Lucado

Born in San Angelo in Texas on January 11, 1955, Max Lucado is the youngest of four children. Books have always been a part of Max’s life. Even when he was at Abilene Christian University studying Communication, Max went door-to-door selling books to make ends meet. Being an author wasn’t always his life plan. Originally, Max Lucado wanted to be a lawyer. That plan was, however, changed when Abeline University required him to take a Biblical studies course. That, alongside a mission trip, changed Max’s mind and the plan that he had for his life. After graduation, Max became an associate minister in Miami. This was the time where he married Denalyn and the couple moved to become missionaries in Brazil.

In 1988 Max Lucado took on the role of a minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio where he served for almost 20 years before announcing his decision to step down in 2007. He still preaches there and spends his time writing books and sermons.

Max Lucado has written almost 100 books, starting with 'On the Anvil: Stories On Being Shaped into God's Image' up to his most recent book ‘Begin Again: Your Hope and Renewal Start Today’. Max has written for a wide range of readers and ages, but each one holds true to his rule of asking “What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?”.

Max Lucado’s bestselling and best-loved books include the Wemmicks series of books for children. The Wemmiks are a collection of walking, talking wooden puppets made by a creator, and feature characters like Punchinello who learns all about who he is and why he is more special than he realises. The illustrations and characters have a warm, Italian folk-tale feel to them, much in the way of Pinocchio. Max’s own father was of Italian origin, making the connection to the books altogether more personal and endearing.

With titles like Anxious for Nothing, Unshakeable Hope, God Will Use This for Good and You’ll Get Through This, it’s easy to see encouragement is baked into everything Max Lucado writes. In his own words, Max “writes books for people who don’t read books.” Rather, Max’s books are more like sermons put to paper...which is what they are. All of Max’s books begin as sermon series usually delivered from the stage at Oak Hills Church. From there they are bound in hardback or paperback and land on bookshelves around the world.

But it’s not all books. There are also group Bible studies based on Max’s books, DVD courses, animated children’s DVDs and even feature films based on Max’s work.

Resurrection, for example, is a feature-length dramatisation of the Easter story based on one of Max Lucado’s own stories.

As well as teaching and Bible study, Max has tried his hand at fiction. Not long ago, he penned Miracle at Higher Grounds Cafe, a story based on a supernatural cafe with a connection to the divine and the question “What if you could ask God anything?”.

Just because Max describes his books and stories as being written “for people who don’t read books” doesn’t mean they aren’t a delight to read. Like time spent in company with a good friend, readers can’t seem to get enough for Max’s warm and witty books.

If you are new to Max Lucado, or just want to find Max’s latest book, then look no further than ‘Begin Again’.
