The Living Bible (TLB) represented a significant leap into a new way of translating the Bible. Much like Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of the Bible (The Message Bible ), Kenneth N. Taylor was inspired to translate chapters of the Bible in a thought-for-thought method to read to his children in devotional times.
From humble beginnings, Kenneth continued to paraphrase the whole New Testament until a copy reached Billy Graham whilst he was recovering in a Hawaiian hospital. The sheer readability and sharp translation of The Living Bible impressed Billy, who asked Kenneth if he could produce 50,000 paperback copies for his evangelistic crusades in 1962. Over the coming year, 600,000 copies of the ‘Living Letters’ were distributed.
The Living Bible was later revised in the 1980s by a group of 90 Greek and Hebrew scholars, bringing their biblical expertise to the popular paraphrase to produce a translation which is both firmly grounded in scholarly research and conveys clear, modern thought to 21st century Christians – The New Living Translation .
